In UOI this week we have been digging deeper into our UOI. We started off by reading scenarios about different children. Reading their stories, we could tell that not all their rights were being upheld. With a partner, we worked together to infer which rights were being denied. We thought about which organisations were responsible for upholding these rights and then we came up with some suggestions as to how they could uphold these.
We also spent some time looking at some photos of children from around the world and could see straight away that they too were denied different rights. We carried out a chalk talk activity to share our ideas about what we could see, what the photos made us think about, we also made some connections between these photos and previous knowledge and we came up with some interesting questions.
In math this week, we have continued to work on place value, and addition and subtraction strategies. Earlier this morning we had a go at a place value challenge. We were given 6 numbers that were written in 5 different scripts. One script was English and another was Chinese. We were able to figure out the Chinese numbers pretty quickly. We then had to use our thinking skills to try and work out what the other numbers were. Some were easy and some were a bit tricky but we all managed to succeed. Once we began to make connections between the digits in a script, we were able to figure out the rest.
We are a group of 8 and 9 year olds who are kind, fun and imaginative!
